Spidey: Don’t Quit Your Day Job

// March 3rd, 2010 // Comics, commentary

Well Pete, I'm reasonably sure you could get a job doing porn..

In case you haven’t heard, today is the day that Amazing Spider-man #623 drops at your local shop.

The issue is significant because today is the day that Peter Parker joins 10% of America’s work force on the unemployment line.  That’s right, Peter gets fired by a man with a Hitler moustache.

Officially Peter gets the boot after digitally altering photos to keep Mayor J Jonah Jameson from being framed by a villain.  Unofficially this is a moronic attempt to comment on the nation’s economy and jobs status.

Sigh. Just when I started reading again.  I’m not going to condemn the story, because I won’t be able to read it until this weekend. That said, this better not last very long.   Ben Urich, former Daily Bugle ace reporter and current Editor in Chief of Front Line has offered Peter a permanent position as a staff photographer.  With any luck this is just a way of transitioning him from JJJ’s office to Urich’s.

If we’re very unlucky this could go on for a year.

I’m all for relevant comics, but the fact is Brand New Day has been in effect for 2 years now, and we have yet to see the return to the Spider-man of old that Joe Quesada promised.  Spider-man never used to be such a depressing book.  The fact is that the current Spidey crew has been turning out some damn fine stories lately, which is exactly why I got back on board after initially boycotting (as a result of the uber-insulting One More Day story).

This is exactly the sort of thing that could end up making me want to leave again.  I don’t want to see Peter unable to pay his rent or begging Harry Osborn for a loan. DON’T WANT TO SEE IT.

However, lest you think I’m all doom and gloom, I will re-iterate: Amazing Spider-man has been kicking ass lately.  If you’ve been on the fence as to whether you should pick it up, try reading a trade or two.  Joe Kelly’s American Son arc would be a pretty sweet start.

My whole point is that I’d like to see the quality continue. Ol’ Pete can only break my heart so many times.

I'm broke, BI-OTCH!

  1. [...] The story didn’t just leave a sour taste in the mouths of its fans, making us feel that decades of patronage was (somewhat) now in the toilet.  It also crippled the incoming Spider-man writing teams who were forced to deal with the fallout.  I won’t rehash all the reasons One More Day is a bad story and a poorly thought-out P.R. stunt (something Marvel can’t seem to stop doing lately).
